This short documentary follows Olivia Davies, the Composer In Residence at the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, as she creates a choral work titled Murmuration. As the first female to hold this position in the orchestra’s history, Olivia’s project becomes a significant milestone. Through interviews and captivating visuals of Olivia in her home studio, the film provides an intimate look into her creative process, exploring the inspiration behind her work, the challenges she faces, and the ultimate performance of her composition.

Combining interview audio with compelling cinematic vision of Olivia in her home studio, as well as a textural soundscape of her natural world and samples of her compositional work, we’re led into Olivia’s physical world, and gain an intimate insight into her internal mind - following the lifecycle of a project from inspiration and the birth of an idea, her creation process and ultimately, the culmination of her work being performed. Olivia’s work is honest and at times uncomfortable, challenging traditional understandings of orchestral sound. Therefore through my interview questioning, my aim as director was to uncover the role of artists to listen and interpret in order to make meaning of the world around them.
